How to Set Up a Home Security System Using Different Web Cameras

Web cameras, or webcams, can provide video to a computer directly through a cable that connects to the router, which is a part of both wired and wireless home networks. You can set up a home security system using wired webcams from different manufacturers and view each webcam at will through a web browser on a computer. The procedure does not involve any additional hardware.

Instructions

Set up a webcam at each location that you wish to monitor. The lens of each webcam should be aimed toward the locations, with the webcams' presence hidden or left exposed as desired. Extend any external antenna that might be on the webcam. Plug the power supply of the webcam into the power port on the webcam and into a wall socket for power.

Plug one end of an Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on the back of the webcam. Snake the cable along the baseboard until you come to the router. Plug the free end of the Ethernet cable into it's respective port on the router. Repeat this procedure with all of the webcams in your intended home surveillance network.

Launch the default web browser by selecting it from the "Start," "All Programs" pop-up menu. Enter the Web address provided by the webcam's instruction manual into the address field at the top of the Web browser to bring up a video of what the webcam is seeing.

Enter the Web address of a different webcam to change to the video of that cam, or bring up a second Web browser window so that you can view more than one webcam's video on the computer at the same time.
