How to Install an Aurora Motion Detector

Motion detection is one of the most reliable invasion technologies in use today. It is designed to emit an infrared detection field that creates a fan-like coverage for the area into which they are aimed. Ideally, the end user or installer would position the Aurora motion detector so that it covers all the available access paths an intruder would have to choose from. Properly installed and correctly mounted, they are virtually impossible for the intruder to trick or avoid.

Things You'll Need

  • Aurora motion detector kit with diagrams
  • Tape measure

Instructions

Plan for pets. Pets which can climb or crawl within six feet of this motion detector will cause false alarms. Do not place any tall furniture into the detection field that pets can get on top of and enter the area being monitored. Mount the detector at least 7 feet high or higher.

Aurora motion detectors set up a vision field of monitoring.

Survey the area for which you are buying the Aurora motion detector. Count the number of openings, since openings represent intruder opportunities. Look for the most advantageous mounting locations which will cover the largest amount of area.

Measure the area with the tape measure on a flat, solid wall from the floor to be sure you are mounting the detector seven feet or higher. Use the cordless drill to drill a 5/16-inch hole through which you will route the wire from the lens back to the control board.

Straight slot screwdrivers make great pry tools.

Remove the front cover by inserting a straight slot screwdriver into the slot at the bottom of the lens unit. Refer to the diagram to confirm the knockout holes for normal, flat wall surface mounting. Use a screwdriver to remove the "A" knockouts in the base of the unit, and remove the PC board. Refer to the "Corner Mounting" section, if you have elected to mount on a corner.

Knock out the access hole for the wire to be routed through the base of the detector control board. Straighten a coat hanger or use another straight, slender, long piece of wire to tie the detector wire to. Simply loop it around the fishing wire tightly and push it into the hole and up the inner side of the dry wall.

Attics are relatively safe wiring routes.

Access the attic, and pull the wire that is fished up the inside of the wall across and over to the mounting location of the control unit. Fish it down behind the sheetrock of the wall to where the control unit is to be mounted.

Mount the base using the Aurora diagrams and instructions. Use a level to make sure the unit and its lens are completely straight and exactly vertical. Re-install the PC board and use the diagrams to correctly set it, and wire in the unit according to the diagrams.
