How to Install a Motion Security Light on an Older Home

A motion security light turns on a floodlight when a moving object passes through its "field of sight." You can install a motion security light in an older home without having to tear open walls and remove wiring. A self-contained, fully assembled solar powered motion security light will only need to be placed outdoors where it can see the sun during the day -- this type of motion security light is available from select hardware stores and security service centers. A few tools will be needed, as will a tripod, but no electrical skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on where you want to install your self-contained, solar powered motion security light on the property of your older home, for example, facing the garage garage or aimed at the back porch.

Open the legs of the tripod and stand it up. Screw the base of the motion security light into the screw on the top of the tripod's platform -- if there is no hole in the base, twist the screw off the tripod with a pliers, apply bonding glue to the platform and press the base against the glue. Hold the two together for two minutes so that the bonding glue can take hold. Let the bonding glue set for a day before continuing.

Place the tripod in the outside area you have decided upon. Screw a floodlight into the bulb socket on the detector. Aim the sensor on the front of the detector so that it is facing towards the area that you want to cover.
