A motion detector functions by tripping a circuit when its sensor detects a movement. The best way to add a motion detector to an old light that uses an incandescent bulb is to avoid any wiring and use a self-contained unit that can screw into the light socket. This makes for a simple procedure that does not require any tools or electrical skills. The self-contained motion detector can be purchased at hardware stores or hobby shops, and will work for indoor and outdoors fixtures.
