Motion Detector Installation Instructions

A motion detector enables a floodlight to be turned on when there is movement within a prespecified field of vision. You can install a motion detector yourself, once you have decided on which existing light socket you want to use (for example, a floodlight on the roof by the garage or an exterior light on a porch). You need a few basic tools; you can get these from a hardware store, if necessary. You also need to know which electrical line feeds power to the light socket so that you can temporarily disconnect it.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the fuse box, which is typically in the basement, although in some cases it might be in a closet or an out-of-the-way spot in the home. Trip the circuit breaker that disconnects power to the electric line where the motion detector is going to be installed; this information is typically written on the inside of the fuse box's cover or on the panel beneath the circuit breaker.

    • 2

Unscrew the bulb from the light socket where you will be installing the motion detector; you may need a ladder to reach the light socket.

    • 3

Remove the screws surrounding the light socket's plate with a Phillips screwdriver. Use your fingers to unscrew the twist tabs that connect the black and white wires from the socket to the wires from the electric line.

    • 4

Twist the white wire from the electric line around the end of the white wire connected to the motion detector. Twist the white wire from the light socket around the two white wires that are now twisted together. Place a twist-tab over the end of the wires and screw it on clockwise.

    • 5

Twist the black wire from the electric line around the black wire from the motion detector. Place a twist-tab over the wires and screw it on clockwise.

    • 6

Twist the black wire from the light socket around the red wire from the motion detector. Place a twist-tab over the wires and screw it on clockwise.

    • 7

Place the motion detector in the same position that was formerly occupied by the light socket's plate. Screw the motion detector's cover plate into position using the screws from the light socket's plate and a Phillips screwdriver. Place the light socket plate over the motion detector, and screw it in position with wood screws using the Phillip screwdriver.

Reinsert the incandescent bulb into the light socket. Restore power to the electric line.
