How to Change Security System Batteries

Security systems are highly adaptable to your specific needs but while the peripheral devices may change from system to system, the basic function of that system usually remains the same. A central panel controls the system as a whole and can activate the system with the push of a button while a code is required to turn off the system. Many security systems operate off of the main power line in a home but there is usually a battery-operated backup in case of power loss. Changing the battery should be done carefully to avoid a false alarm.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your alarm system by entering the deactivation code into the control panel. You should not tamper with the battery when the alarm is active.

    • 2

Contact your alarm company to place your system on "test," which will prevent alarms from activating temporarily.

    • 3

Remove the front cover of the main alarm unit. There will usually be screws you will need to twist out with a screwdriver to get the panel off all the way.

    • 4

Enter the engineer code to completely disable the system temporarily. This is different from the original alarm code and should have been provided to you when the system was first installed. You may not need one if the alarm company has your system on test mode. If you don't know the engineer code, contact your security company to see if you need it. Otherwise, your alarm could activate when you disconnect the old battery, even with the system turned off.

    • 5

Turn off the power to the main unit by either turning off the breaker or unplugging it. This helps prevent injury from electrical discharge.

    • 6

Unhook the battery and plug the new battery into the wire harness.

    • 7

Close the panel and screw the cover back on. Restore power to the unit.

    • 8

Enter the alarm deactivation code into the control panel if the alarm activates. Contact your security company immediately if the alarm goes off or does anything unusual. They'll take the system off test mode at a prearranged time, but calling them once you're done can get the system restored sooner.
