DIY: Wireless Security Alarm

A wireless security alarm provides a home with intruder detection without the need for invasive wiring. There are a number of methods that can be employed to install your own wireless security alarm system -- none of which require the assistance of a professional installer. Wireless security alarm systems are available from select hardware stores and home and garden supply centers. The systems vary in price, but all of them eliminate the need to have wires running through your home.

Wireless sensors can provide a warning should a door or window be opened. Install the sensor-based wireless security alarm by first opening those windows and/or doors that you want protected. Place passive sensor plates against the edge of the windows or doors and the sensor receiver plates against the edges of the window sills or door frames. Insert batteries into the battery compartments of the sensor transmitters which are then screwed onto the side of the window or door with wood screws using a Phillips screwdriver. Plug the connecting cable into the port on the transistor and the port on the sensor receiver plates. Place the wireless alarm receiver next to your bed, for example, on a night table. Plug the receiver's power cord into a wall outlet. Press the "Sync" buttons on the transmitters and on the receiver to sync them all together. The alarm in the receiver will now sound if a door or window should be opened.

A wireless video camera will provide a view of an area where an intruder might enter the home, for example, the garage. Place the wireless video camera on a table or bookcase, so that the lens faces the direction of the entrance way that an intruder might enter from such as the front of the garage door from inside the garage, or the door leading to an attached garage from inside the home. Plug the power cord from the camera into a wall outlet for power. Place the video receiver next to a TV that will be used to watch the video. Connect a video cable between the video out of the receiver and a video in on the TV. Turn the TV on and navigate to the "Video input" menu using the remote. Select the video input to which the cable is connected. Press the "Menu" button again. Plug the receiver's power cord into a wall outlet for power. Turn the receiver on and watch the video being transmitted from the wireless video camera.

A stand-alone motion detector will wirelessly monitor an area of your home that you want to protect such as a hallway leading to the front door. Place the motion detector on the floor with the sensor on the front aimed at the area that you want protected. Plug the detector's power cord into a wall outlet for power. Adjust the "sensitivity" midway between the extremes it can be set to so that the detector will not be overly sensitive. Rotate the "volume" clockwise until it stops. Press the "on" button or slide the selector switch to the "on" setting -- the procedure here will vary depending on the make of the detector. The motion detector's alarm will now sound if the door is opened.
