How to Install a Video Security System

A video security system enables you to watch a door or window where an intruder could enter the home. You can install a video security system yourself providing you have purchased a camera and receiver kit from an electronics store or select hardware store. No dangerous electrical wiring is required, nor will you have to damage any wall mounting the camera. This makes the video security system suitable for being installed even even by a minor, although adult supervision in this case is recommended.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand the camera tripod in the area that the video camera will be monitoring. Tighten the screw on the platform at the top of the tripod into the hole in the bottom of the video camera.

    • 2

Plug the power cord from the camera into a wall outlet for power. Rotate the tripod so that the lens at the front of the camera is pointed towards the area to be monitored, for example, a door leading to the backyard.

    • 3

Screw an end of the coaxial video cable into the single coax output connection on the video camera -- the connection typically is at the back of the camera, although it can be on the side. Run the coaxial video cable along the baseboard of the wall until you come to the TV set that will be used to watch the video coming from the camera. Place the video receiver next to the TV. Plug the power cord from the video receiver into a wall outlet.

Insert one end of a S-video cable into the S-video output on the receiver. If there's only a composite video output, use a composite video cable instead. Insert the other end of the S-video cable (or composite video cable) into the corresponding connector on the side or back panel of the TV.

Screw the free end of the coaxial video cable into the coax input on the video receiver. Turn the TV on with the TV remote. Press "Menu," followed by "System Setup" or "System Options." The exact name of the menu will vary depending on the make of the TV. Select the "Video input" or similarly named menu. Select the video input on the TV that the video cable from the receiver is connected to. Press the "Menu" button again. Turn the video receiver on. Watch the video from the video camera on the TV screen.
