If the batteries in your smoke detector are running low or completely dead, your device will not work. If your smoke detector makes a continuous beeping sound, replace the batteries. This beeping sound is usually a low battery warning.
Installing your smoke detectors in the wrong locations can cause them to go off accidentally. Steam from the kitchen and showers can trick smoke detectors into thinking there's smoke, so install them at least 3 feet away from these locations. For the best performance, install smoke detectors on a ceiling or high wall with the top of the alarm between 4 and 12 inches from the ceiling. Keep the devices at least 3 feet away from vents and air conditioners.
A dirty and clogged smoke detector can fail to go off. Insects, cobwebs and dirt get trapped in the sensor. To remove them, take down the smoke detector and vacuum it. Test your smoke detectors at least once a month. To do so, press the reset or test button. Listen for the alarm to sound. Replace the batteries if the alarm doesn't sound.
