How to Run an Alarm Wire

Running alarm wire is a basic necessity for installing any alarm system. Keeping alarm system projects simple at first is a wise way to ensuring proper wiring and connections for later additions. Building a system too complex and broad at one time can cause major wiring confusion. Ensure all necessary electrical panels and devices are powered down before wiring commences. Running alarm wire is an easy activity with the help of a skilled assistant.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 2-inch by 2-inch square hole into a standard wall using a drywall saw. The hole must start where the main panel will be placed. Leave at least three feet of cable hanging from the hole. This ensures plenty of excess for proper cutting, crimping and wiring. The panel will later be fitted over the hole to conceal it.

    • 2

Feed the cable up through the hole until the wire extends above the wall frame header and can be reached by hand. One person should feed the cable and another person should be on a ladder to receive it.

    • 3

Run the cable along horizontal ceiling beams until you reach the wall where your alarm terminal is placed. Secure the cable to the middle of each beam with cable fastener staples. Place a fastener every six to 12 inches.

    • 4

Cut a 2-inch by 2-inch hole in the drywall where the terminal will be located. Push the cable down behind the wall until it feeds through the hole. Leave another three feet of excess cable at this end.
