How do I Self Install Wireless Intrusion Alarms?

No one wants to come home to find that they have been burgled, or worse, enter the house and discover that an intruder is there. Fitting an alarm system is one way to help protect your home from someone breaking in. Traditional wired alarm systems require planning cable runs and then installing them for each sensor. Modern wireless alarm systems make the installation simpler and quicker because there are none of these wires to consider.

Determine how many motion detectors you require. Each room in the house plus the hallways can have a motion detector covering them. It is also a good idea to have a detector placed in the garage to protect your vehicle. Locate each room's detector in a corner as high up as possible. Avoid false readings caused by motion outside the house, such as swaying branches, moving animals and even sunlight, by making sure the detectors face away from large windows.

    • 2

Place the motion detector's backing plate against the wall and mark the mounting points with a pencil. Drill a hole at each pencil mark using a drill bit matching the wall anchors and supplied screws. Insert wall anchors into the hole and fix the back plate to the wall with screws. Clip the sensor's cover onto the back plate.

Count the number of exterior doors and windows that you need to monitor. Circuit break detectors consist of two magnetized pieces that trigger when a door or window is opened separating them. One part of the detector is fitted to the window or door jam with the other secured to the door or window.

Place the sensor against the door jam and mark its fixing points with a pencil. Drill a pilot hole at each pencil point. Fix the sensor to the jam using the supplied screws.

    • 5

Close the door, place the magnetized plate on the edge of its back surface, lined up with the sensor, and mark its fixing holes with a pencil. Drill pilot holes and secure the magnetized plate with the supplied screws. For windows, place the sensor on the window jam and the magnetized plate on the window frame adjacent to the sensor.

Position the control panel close to the exit door that you use most frequently. This makes it easy for you to arm and deactivate the system as you leave and enter your home. Hold the back plate of the control panel against the wall and mark its mounting points with a pencil. Drill holes through the marks with a bit sized to match the wall anchors and supplied screws. Attach the panel to the wall with the screws. Cut power to the household circuit you're splicing into. Connect the alarm to the appropriate circuit following manufacturer's directions. Set up the system according to manufacturer's directions and test each sensor you installed.
