How to Install Security

House-wide security provides peace of mind to the inhabitants of a home. You can install security in your home that will prevent an intruder from entering your home, warn you if an intruder has managed to enter or sound an alarm once the intruder is inside. You will need to purchase security kits from an electronics store or a home and garden shop, as well as have a number of common household tools available. No special electrical skills are needed, and you do not have to pay any monthly subscription fees for the security you have installed to protect your home.

Close one of the windows that you will be protecting. Drill a hole into the bottom edge of the window with a portable drill. Place a locking plate on the window sill. Line up the bolt at the end of the locking plate with the hole in the window. Screw the locking plate onto the window sill with wood screws using a Phillips screwdriver. Turn the screw on the locking plate to force the bolt into the hole. Repeat this procedure with all of the windows in the home. Place the locking plate against the back bottom edge of the door with the bolt facing the door frame. Screw wood screws through the locking plate onto the door using a Phillips screwdriver. Turn the screw on the locking plate to extend the bolt across the door frame. Repeat this procedure with all of the doors.

Place a wireless video camera on a tripod. Place the tripod so that the lens of the camera is aimed toward a window or door of the house. Plug the camera's power and transmission cord into a wall outlet. Plug the camera receiver unit into a wall outlet next to a TV. Connect a video cable between the video output connection on the receiver and a video input connection on the TV. Turn the TV on and select the "Menu" settings with its remote. Select "System," followed by "Video input," followed by the video input the cable is connected to--the exact names will vary depending on the TV. Press "Menu" again to exit the settings. Turn the receiver on and watch the video from the wireless camera on the TV. Place additional video cameras on tripods in order to monitor other entranceways into the home.

Open a window and screw a sensor plate to the bottom edge with wood screws using a Phillips screwdriver. Screw a receiver sensor plate on the window sill beneath the sensor plate with wood screws using a Phillips screwdriver. Run the wire attached to the receiver sensor plate against the baseboard of the wall until you reach the control panel alarm that is mounted onto a wall in a closet or some other hidden location. Loosen the screws on the "input" section of the control panel with a Phillips jeweler's screwdriver and wind the wires from the receiver sensor plate around the screws. Tighten the screws. Open a door and screw a sensor plate onto the bottom edge with wood screws using a Phillips screwdriver. Screw a receiver sensor plate against the bottom edge of the door frame opposite the sensor plate with wood screws using a Phillips screwdriver. Run the wire attached to the receiver sensor plate over to where the control panel alarm is. Attach the wire to the control panel alarm in the same manner as was done with the window receiver plate. Repeat these two procedures in order to wire every window and door in the home to the control panel alarm.
