How to Change Batteries in a Honeywell 6148 Security System

The Honeywell 6148 security system provides homeowners with protection against intruders. The battery backup in the control panel ensures that the system will work even if the power is cut. To change the batteries in a Honeywell 6148 security system, you will simply need a few tools commonly found around most homes.

      Call the security monitoring service that you subscribe to. Tell the personnel at the service to put the response setting for your security system on "Test." Enter the passcode to disarm the control panel.

      Unplug the control panel's power cord from the AC socket that is supplying electrical power. If the Honeywell 6148 is hard-wired into the home's electrical system, turn the control panel's power off at the circuit breaker box.

      If there is a padlock-locked latch attached to the front case of the control panel, unlock the padlock with the key that came with it and remove it. Remove the screws from the sides, top and bottom of the control panel with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the front cover off the control panel and place it aside.

      Loosen the connectors at the top of the batteries in the battery compartment. Remove the connectors from the battery contacts. Remove the batteries from the battery compartment and dispose of them properly.

      Place the replacement batteries into the battery compartment. Attach the connectors to the batteries' contacts in the same manner as they were attached earlier. Place the front cover back on the control panel. Reattach the screws and reattach the padlock, if the unit has a padlock.

      Plug the control panel's power cord back in or turn the system's breaker on at the circuit breaker box. Enter the code to rearm the control panel. Call the security monitoring service that you subscribe to and tell them to put the response setting for your security system on "Normal."
