There are a number of synthetic ingredients that make up the gum base of chewing gum and bubble gum. Petroleum products are among these, but are used less commonly. The actual ingredients are trade secrets, but the FDA lists the approved ingredients and any limits on the amounts or uses of those ingredients. The goal for all chewing gum is to strike the perfect balance of chewiness, softness and flavor. Petroleum products provide the chewiness, replacing the tree sap or natural latex rubber that was used more commonly before World War II.
