Home Security Systems & Hardware

Home security systems are designed to be tailored specifically for your individual needs. A building with multiple entrances and floors will have different needs from a one-floor home with a front and back door. There are many security systems you should consider when planning your own home security system.
  1. ADT Systems

    • ADT is one of the largest home security companies in the world, and they expanded their client base when parent company Tyco purchased Broadview Security in 2010. Broadview had previously been owned and operated by Brinks. ADT will install a system specifically designed for your home, or you can purchase a cheaper stock system such as the ADT Safewatch QuickConnect, which comes with a large LCD display on its control panel, a motion sensor, and two door and window sensors. ADT can also monitor the system for you and alert emergency services in the event of an alarm activation.

    DIY Installations

    • There are many alarm systems that come in a box so you can install them yourself. The systems are limiting because they may only come with two or three door sensors, while you may have four or five doors in the house, but they can be more cost effective than tailoring a system for your house through a professional company. You also save money on an installation fee. One example is the GE Concord 4 that comes with two door or window sensors, a control panel designed to handle 96 different zones, a motion sensor that is pet-resistant to avoid accidental activation, an indoor and outdoor siren, and a battery backup in case your home loses power.

    Security Lighting

    • Security lighting is sometimes not included with a traditional security system, but it is a very useful tool in keeping unwanted intruders away from your home at night or when you are out of town. The lighting relies on either light-sensitive sensors that activate as it gets dark, or motion sensors that turn the lights on when movement is detected near the home. Intruders often prefer to work in darkness since it lessens the risk of getting seen and caught. Installing security lights along the outside perimeter of your home can greatly increase your overall security.

    Security Cameras

    • Security cameras are generally more useful in a business building than a home. Businesses have many more people going in and out on a daily basis, and the cameras can help identify suspects and also function as a deterrent. However, if you have small children that are taken care of by a nanny during the day, or have specific valuables that you want added protection for, security cameras are very useful in both catching people behaving illegally in your home and deterring dishonest activity in the first place.
