DIY Home Security Alarms

Cost is usually one of the primary concerns preventing people from investing in a home security alarm system. While it is true that security system installation and monitoring costs can add up to a lot of expense, a range of do-it-yourself systems are available. While the individual components in these systems may vary slightly, they function in similar fashion. Installing a home security alarm system yourself requires some diligence and basic tools, but it can provide peace of mind at a cost-effective rate.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the number of sensors your home needs. Sensors are the devices that alert your system when someone breaches a door or window. Count the number of entrances to your home, including windows. You'll need one sensor per window.

    • 2

Buy a wireless do-it-yourself security system that accommodates the number of sensors you need. Most systems include a control panel, door and window sensors, and an alarm siren. Wired systems are usually much more complicated and normally require professional help for installation, while wireless systems are simpler to set up.

    • 3

Attach the sensors to each door and window. They usually attach via adhesive. A sensor has two pieces: a magnet and a transmitter. The transmitter sticks to the door or window frame, and the magnet goes on the door or window.

    • 4

Choose a location for the control panel. It should be close enough to your main entrance so you can get to it quickly to turn it off when coming home but far enough away so it cannot be seen through windows. It also needs to be near an electrical outlet, which will power the control panel. Avoid using an outlet that can be turned off with a light switch.

    • 5

Drill a hole into the wall where you want the control panel to go, and run the power wire for the panel through the hole. Drill another hole under the electric outlet you will use for power, and pull the cable out and plug the panel in.

    • 6

Set up the siren in the same fashion you installed the control panel. Drill a hole in the wall where you want it to go, and drill a hole under the electrical outlet that will supply the siren with power. Run the power cable through the wall. The siren is normally programmed by adjusting its switches with a small screwdriver so it recognizes the alarm access code you wish to use.

    • 7

Program the control panel in accordance with the security system's instructions. The programming method fluctuates greatly among security systems. Program it with the same access code that you plugged into the siren.

    • 8

Test your security system. When a door or window is opened, the transmitter on the associated sensor sends a signal to the siren, which sounds until it receives a disarm signal from the control panel when you enter the correct access code. The system should be checked monthly to verify it works properly.
