FAQs on Home Alarm & Security Systems

Home security systems are useful for raising the resale value of your home, protecting your home against invasion and theft and providing peace-of-mind for homeowners when they are out of the house. Security systems are complex technologically in that they involve a number of different devices that must operate in conjunction with each other for the system to function optimally. Questions typically arise when someone is considering buying a home security system.
  1. How Does a Security System Work?

    • Almost all security systems are controlled by a main control panel. Some systems will have multiple panels around the building that all perform the same function so people can get to one quicker when necessary. Sensors are positioned on each door and window and motion detectors are often added to high traffic areas of the house or office. When a sensor is activated, either by motion or by a magnet strip being moved away from a transmitter as a door is opened, a signal is sent to the control panel, which sends another signal to the siren. If the system is hooked up to a monitoring system, the panel will also send a signal through the phone line to the alarm company, and law enforcement are also often notified.

    How is a System Installed?

    • Even a "wireless" system relies on power cables for its control panel and typically its siren. Holes are drilled in the wall so that the power cable can be run through the wall from the panel and the siren over to their respective electrical outlets. Another hole is drilled under the electrical outlet so the plugs can be pulled out and plugged into the outlet. The siren and the panel are placed over the initial holes so they are not noticeable. Two-piece sensors are then positioned on each door and window to protect against breach. The transmitter hooks onto the door or window frame while a magnetic strip sticks to the door or window itself. When a door or window is opened, the strip is pulled away from the transmitter, which will then notify the control panel and result in alarm activation.

What Are the Advantages of a Security System?

    • Security systems make it more difficult to break into a home, meaning burglars are likely to bypass the house in favor of an easier target, since they generally want to get in and out of a house as quickly and easily as possible. This is why homes with security systems will have signs around the house perimeter advertising the fact that an alarm is active. The alarm will also notify emergency services in the event of a fire if it is hooked up to the phone line. Many systems have one-touch activation for medical emergency that cuts down the response time of an ambulance. A security system in place also helps relieve stress for the homeowner when he is away from home since the odds of home invasion are reduced.

What Peripherals Can Be Added to a System?

    • Security cameras are useful for businesses to help prevent employee theft and industrial espionage and they can be beneficial for parents of small children as well if they are left with a babysitter or nanny in the home on a regular basis. Security lighting is often added to the home perimeter, which will activate automatically either as the sun goes down or when a motion sensor detects movement approaching the house. Smoke detectors can also be plugged into the system so they notify the control panel if smoke is detected and the panel can potentially notify the fire department automatically.
