Inventory your home's doors and windows. To fully protect your home, each will need a sensor.
Purchase a security system that includes the needed number of sensors. Basic do-it-yourself systems should include door and window sensors, a control panel and a siren. Wireless systems are easy to install and are best for do-it-yourself installations.
Decide where you will install the control panel and the siren. Each will plug into an outlet, so each needs to be near an outlet. The outlets should not be controlled by a light switch, or someone could deactivate the system accidentally. The siren should be placed near the home's center so it can be heard throughout the house. The control panel must be near the main entrance so you can turn it off when you arrive home. It should not be viewable from outside.
Drill holes in the walls where the panel and siren will be placed. Drill holes under the outlets where each will plug in. The holes under the outlets must be large enough to accommodate the plugs on the power cords. You want to avoid having to figure out how to get the cables through wall studs, so the best location for simple installation of each device is between the same two studs as the outlet it will plug into.
Run the power cords for both the siren and the panel down through the walls from the installation holes to the holes under the outlets. The panel and the siren will each cover the installation holes, so those holes will not be visible.
Enter an access code into your siren. This usually is accomplished by manipulating switches in the side of the siren, using a screwdriver. Check your owner's manual to verify the proper procedure. Don't activate the control panel until the system's sensors are in place.
Stick the transmitters of your door or window sensors on the frames of the doors or windows. Apply the magnets of the sensors to the doors or windows so they line up with the transmitter. They usually are stuck in place with adhesive. The transmitters should already have batteries in them. If they don't, place the appropriate type of battery in each one as you install it. The required battery type may be different in different systems.
Activate the control panel, and program it in accordance with your system's instructions. You will set a deactivation code that matches the code you set at the siren. When you enter that code into the panel after the alarm goes off, the panel will transmit that code to the siren, which will then shut the system off.
Inspect and test your system to be sure everything is working properly. Run a monthly system check to verify that nothing is wrong that could compromise your home's security.
