Fire Inspector Alarm Guide

Fire alarms are more complicated than smoke alarms because they not only emit a warning when smoke or fire is detected, but they also activate fire suppression systems automatically. Fire alarms need to be inspected regularly to verify that they remain in proper working condition.
  1. Trouble Panels

    • These panels need to be inspected weekly. The LEDs should flash and at least one trouble panel should be visible from any point in the room.

    Sprinkler Devices

    • These must be inspected every three months. The connection between the sprinkler and the water supply must be tight and leak-free.

    Batteries

    • Every six months, the trouble panel batteries must be tested to verify that they hold a full charge. They must be replaced if they no longer hold a full charge.

    Voice Evacuation

    • The public address system needs to be tested annually so that in the event of a fire, verbal instructions can be given across the system speakers.

    Detectors

    • Every year, the smoke alarms and heat detectors attached to the fire alarm system must be tested. A properly functioning alarm triggers both the audible alarm and the flashing lights to warn the hearing impaired. Both will need to be replaced every ten years.
