How to Hook Up an Outdoor Siren to My Existing Home Alarm

An existing home alarm system may warn the inhabitants of an intruder, but if there is no outdoor siren, none of the neighbors will be aware that there is anything wrong going on. You can install a wireless outdoor siren to your existing wireless home alarm so the entire neighborhood will be aware when danger intrudes on your home. You can purchase the siren from a security system center or select home and garden shops. You'll also need a few household tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate an existing electrical junction box on the outside of your home --- for example, wired to a light fixture above the garage. Trip the circuit breaker in the fuse box to kill the electric power to the electrical junction box.

    • 2

Place a ladder beneath the electrical junction box. Remove the screws holding the lighting fixture to the wall, using a Philips screwdriver. Pull the fixture off the wall. Remove the screw-tab nut connectors from over the two twisted pairs of wires with a counterclockwise rotation. Place the nuts in your pocket.

    • 3

Separate the wires from each other. Place the lighting fixture aside.

    • 4

Twist the already stripped end of the black wire from the siren around the exposed end of the black wire coming out of the hole that the lighting fixture had covered. Twist the already stripped end of the white wire from the siren around the exposed end of the black wire coming out of the hole.

    • 5

Screw a screw-tab nut connector over each pair of twisted wires. Push the wires into the hole. Place the siren over the hole, against the wall. Screw wood screws through the holes in the sides of the siren to the wall, using the Phillips screwdriver.

    • 6

Restore power to the electric line. Flip the switch that turned the light fixture on to it's "On" position. Tape over the switch with a strip of duct tape.

    • 7

Go to the wireless alarm control panel. Enter the password to access the menus. Navigate to the "Output" menu. Select "External alarm" or a similarly named option.

    • 8

Go to the siren. Press the "Sync" button on its side once. Press the "Sync" button or touch-screen button on the control panel within 10 to 15 seconds of pressing the button on the siren --- if necessary, have a second person press the control panel's button for you once you have pressed the button on the siren.

    • 9

Navigate back to the control panel's main menu. Rearm the alarm system by entering the password again.
