How to Install Security Door Contacts

A security door can benefit from having sensors attached to it -- this will enable an alarm system to be altered if the door is physically damaged or removed from the door frame. To attach sensor contacts to the security door, assemble a few tools that are commonplace to most homes and office settings. The procedure is straightforward, does not require any electrical skills and will not damage the security door in any way.

Things You'll Need

  • Power drill, Phillips-head tip
  • Sensor contact plate
  • Sensor contact receiving plate
  • Metal screws
  • Phillips jeweler's screwdriver
  • Security wire cable
  • Security control panel

Instructions

    • 1

Open the security door -- if there are locks or deadbolts that keep the security door closed, unlock or loosen the locks and deadbolts first.

    • 2

Place the sensor contact plate against the inside bottom edge of the security door, facing the door frame. Screw metal screws through the protective metal strip covering the edge of the door and into the wood -- use a power drill with a Phillips-head tip to do this, since a hand-powered screwdriver will not penetrate the metal strip.

    • 3

Place the sensor contact receiving plate against the inside edge of the door frame, opposite the sensor contact plate that is on the bottom inside edge of the door. Screw metal screws through the protective metal strip covering the inside edge of the door frame and into the wood -- use the power drill with a Phillips-head tip to do this.

    • 4

Loosen the two screws on the sensor contact receiving plate with a Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Wind the exposed end of a security wire around each screw. Tighten the screw.

    • 5

Run the cable that houses the two security wires across the baseboard of the wall until you reach the security control panel. Wire the already-stripped ends of the two wires at the free end of the cable to the security control panel, once it has been disarmed with a password first. Close the security door and rearm the security control panel.
