The Alarm Security Installation & Maintenance Training

Diploma

• Individuals who are interested in entering the alarm security installation and maintenance industry can complete a diploma program that lasts a year or less at a technical school. Students generally need a high school diploma or GED to get into a technical school. In addition, alarm system manufacturers and dealers offer training programs. Industry groups including the Electronic Security Association (ESA) actually provide schooling in video surveillance and access control as well. The Automatic Fire Alarm Association (AFAA), also offers training in the trade. No prerequisites generally exist to get into these types of programs.

Apprenticeship

• Training in alarm security installation and maintenance also is available through apprenticeships. Apprenticeships combine classroom instruction with paid, hands-on training. Apprenticeships do not necessarily require applicants to have a high school diploma or GED. These training programs usually last four to five years and pay beginning students about half of what an employer pays a journeyman in the field. A student's wages increase as he gains more experience.

Courses

• Classes in an alarm security installation and maintenance training program cover topics such as electrical theory for construction, the requirements of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and commercial wiring information. Students also learn about home security automation, installing cameras and managing security projects. Courses that focus on fire alarm systems additionally review how to place smoke detectors, information on automatic fire sprinklers and low-voltage basics.

Certification

• Training in alarm security installation and maintenance prepares students to be certified through organizations such as the ESA by passing an exam. Types of certification include those for a certified alarm/security technician, certified systems integrator or certified service technician.

  In addition, fire alarm installers can be certified through the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). Certification is available for automatic sprinkler system layout testing/inspection, fire alarm systems testing and water-based systems testing. Although certification is voluntary, it improves a professional's employment opportunities in this industry if she is certified. Some alarm system manufacturers even offer certifications to professionals who want to install and maintain their products.
