DIY Wireless Hybrid Alarm Systems

A wireless alarm can activate a light or a horn to warn the inhabitants of a house that an intruder has entered. To make a hybrid wireless alarm that uses a siren powered by the house's electricity, acquire the horn from a hardware store and a wireless alarm kit from a security supply shop. Tools that are commonly found in the home will be needed, as will a basic understanding of how electricity works.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the window that will be protected by the wireless alarm. Place a sensor plate against the window's bottom. Screw wood screws through the holes in the sensor plate and into the window using a screwdriver.

    • 2

Place a sensor-receiving plate on the windowsill, directly beneath the sensor plate, so that the two will touch when the window is closed. Screw wood screws through the holes in the sensor-receiving plate and into the windowsill using a screwdriver.

    • 3

Turn the wireless transmitter that is connected to the sensor-receiving plate by wires so that the back is facing you. Remove the battery compartment lid from the back. Place the correct type and number of batteries into the battery compartment and close the lid. Replace the screw.

    • 4

Turn the wireless transmitter over so that the front is facing you. Place the transmitter beneath the windowsill, on the wall. Insert wood screws into the holes on the sides of the transmitter. Tighten the screws into the wall with a screwdriver.

    • 5

Place the wireless receiver in a room that is central to the house. Plug the wireless receiver's power cord into a wall outlet for power. Press the "Sync" button on the transmitter and on the receiver to sync the two together. Install additional window sensors to protect as many windows as you wish.

    • 6

Go to the fuse box and trip the circuit breaker that supplies power to the room. Remove the screws from the AC socket wall plate. Pull the plate off the wall and place it aside.

    • 7

Loosen the two screws on the side of the AC plug module that is now revealed. Wrap the stripped ends of the two power wires connected to the AC-powered siren around the screws so that the black wire is around the screw that already has a black wire wound around it and the white wire is around the screw that already has a white wire around it. Tighten the screws.

    • 8

Gouge a notch in the corner of the wall with a utility knife. Place the wires into the notch and return the wall plate over the AC plug module. Reattach the wall plate screws.

    • 9

Cut two 1-foot lengths of electrical wire from the spool using the wire cutters. Strip 1/2 inch of insulation off both ends of both wires with a wire strippers. Loosen the two screws on the back of the siren with a screwdriver. Wind the exposed end of a wire around each screw. Tighten the screws.

    • 10

Place the siren on the wall. Screw the siren to the wall with wood screws.

    • 11

Loosen the two screws on the receiver that are labeled "Aux" out---the exact name may be different depending on the manufacturer---using your fingers. Wrap an exposed end of each of the two wires connected to the siren around the screws on the receiver. Tighten the screws. Restore the electric power at the fuse box.
