Motion Detector Connection Instructions

Unlike security system sensors which require physical contact in order to function, a motion detector activates when movement passes by or in front of its sensor. To activate a security light, all you need to do is connect a motion detector to the light itself. The installation process is straightforward and only requires the use of common tools found in most homes.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Trip the circuit breaker of the fuse box so as to disconnect the electric power going to the room or area where the motion detector is being installed.

    • 2

Place a ladder against the wall where the security light is mounted. Remove the screws surrounding the security light using a screwdriver. Place the screws in your pocket for future use.

    • 3

Pull the security light away from the wall. Remove the screw-tab connectors that are located on the two pairs of twisted wires that jut out from the hole in the wall. Place the screw-tab connectors in your pocket for future use.

    • 4

Wind the already-stripped end of the black wire from the motion detector around the twisted pair of black wires jutting out from the wall. Wind the already-stripped end of the white wire from the motion detector around the twisted pair of white wires jutting out from the wall. Screw the screw-tab connectors on each pair of twisted wires.

    • 5

Push the wires into the hole in the wall. Place the security light against the wall over the hole. Reattach the screws through the security light and into the wall.

    • 6

Place the motion detector on the wall next to the security light. Screw wood screws through the holes in the brackets on either side of the detector and into the wall using the screwdriver.

    • 7

Angle the sensor at the front of the motion detector towards the area that is to be covered. Remove the screw holding the control panel lid closed with a screwdriver or a Torx screwdriver; the type of screwdriver needed depends on the type of detector being installed.

    • 8

Open the side panel on the detector. Rotate the control knob or slide the selector switch labeled "Sensitivity" fully counterclockwise so that the detector will react immediately to movement.

    • 9

Rotate the control knob or slide the selector switch labeled "Lighting" to the midway position so that any ambient lighting will be accepted as normal by the detector.

    • 10

Rotate the control knob or slide the selector switch labeled "Timing" so that it is against the "30"; this setting will guarantee that the security light, once activated, stays on for 30 seconds.

    • 11

Close the lid. Reattach the screw. Restore the electric power at the fuse box.
