How to Alarm Louvered Windows

Wiring a window with a sensor enables the alarm system to detect when the window is being disturbed. There are a number of ways to apply sensors to a louvered window so it can be protected by an alarm system. The procedures are straightforward and, with minor differences, similar to installing sensors on windows that open vertical or horizontally. You will need tools common to most households and alarm sensors you can get from the same store or security retailer that supplied the alarm system.

  • Sensor receiving plate
  • Wood screws
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Alarm system wiring

Instructions

    • 1

Rotate the knob on the louvered window to open it slightly. Place a sensor plate against the inside bottom edge of the opened window. Screw the sensor plate to the window with wood screws using a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 2

Place a sensor receiving plate on the louvered window frame edge, opposite the sensor plate. Screw the sensor receiving plate on the frame with wood screws using the Phillips screwdriver. Close the window.

    • 3

Run the wires attached to the sensor receiving plate to the alarm system's control panel. Enter the password on the control panel's keyboard to disarm the alarm system. Wire the wires from the sensor receiving plate to the control panel's inputs. Enter the password again to rearm the alarm system.

    • 4

Remove the paper backing from the adhesive side of the vibration sensor. Place the adhesive side of the sensor against the glass on the closed louvered window. Run the wiring from the vibration sensor to the alarm's control panel. Disarm the alarm at the control panel, attach the wiring to the inputs on the control panel and rearm the system.

    • 5

Turn the lever counterclockwise to open the louvered window as wide as it will go. Screw wood screws through the holes in a wireless sensor plate placed against the bottom outside edge of the window in concert with a wireless receiver plate screwed on the inside edge of the window's frame, opposite the wireless sensor plate.

    • 6

Close the louvered window by turning the lever clockwise. Insert batteries into the battery compartment of the wireless transmitter attached by wires to the wireless receiver plate. Screw the transmitter to the wall, beneath the windowsill, using wood screws and the Phillips screwdriver.

Press the "Sync" button on both the wireless control panel and the wireless transmitter to synchronize them together.
