How to Stop an Alarm

An alarm system protects a home by sounding an alarm when an intrusion takes place. An alarm that has been sounded for no good reason -- for example, as a result of a short in the wiring of a sensor connected to the alarm -- must be silenced so that the alarm system can be troubleshooted. There are a number of ways to stop (a.k.a., "disable") the alarm without causing it any permanent damage.

Enter the password into the alarm's control panel. If the alarm does not immediately stop sounding, navigate to the "Test/Diagnostics" menu and select the menu. This will stop the alarm as the alarm system goes into a testing mode that takes precedence over all other functions.

Trip the circuit breaker that provides the alarm system with electrical power. Open the control panel's outer casing -- this will either involve removing screws with a Phillips screwdriver or unlocking a latch with a padlock key. Unscrew the battery caps from the top of the replacement battery. Pull the battery leads off the battery's contacts.

Enter the password into the control panel. Navigate to the "Input" (or similarly named) menu. Reconfigure the input menu to ignore a "Zone" (area) connected to the alarm system. Return to the main menu and enter the password. If the alarm does not stop, repeat this procedure with another "Zone" until the alarm stops sounding.
