Definition of an Automated Home Alarm System

• Because there are so many home alarm and security systems on the market, you may be confused as to what "automated" really means. The control panel is where all the security components, such as motion detectors, magnetic locks, smoke detectors, closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras and the like are connected and controlled. With an automated system, you can activate, deactivate and configure the system without having to go near the control panel. Furthermore, an automated system will have a combination of hardware and software that makes decisions without having to consult you. That way, if it detects intrusions, motion or any other suspicious activities in the area of coverage, it will decide to raise an alarm, signal you via wireless or mobile technology or contact the local police or the fire department.

• One type of automated alarm system is the "smart" type of system where the entire setup is configured to work without any human assistance. Basically, this kind of system is controlled by a smart computer and encompasses all measures of security from burglary and intrusion to fire issues. Furthermore, the system is integrated with communication devices such as telephones, the Internet and mobile technology, allowing it to signal both you and the specific government agencies when necessary. If the system is unexpectedly disturbed or turned off, you and the police or the fire department will be alerted through a call, SMS or a digital message over the Internet.

Instead, you can activate and deactivate the system through a phone call, a text message or SMS, a wireless portable control device or through a keypad. Some systems even have identification technology such as biometrics and voice recognition for keyless entry and verbal configuration.

This type of system uses digital CCTV cameras not only to capture every movement in real time in a particular area of coverage, but to identify threats and make decisions in the absence of human intervention.
