DIY: Home-security Alarm System

A basic home-security alarm system notifies you when an intruder enters your home through a door or a window. You can easily set up a wireless system purchased from a hobby store, home-improvement store, or home-security supply center. This do-it-yourself project requires only tools that are commonly available in most homes. Your computer's home network, if you have one, will not be compromised in any way by your new wireless home-security alarm system.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on a door to be protected by your home-security alarm, for example, the front door. Open the door. Place a magnetic contact switch against the bottom edge of the door, facing the door frame.

    • 2

Screw wood screws through the pre-cut holes in the switch and into the door, using a Phillips screwdriver. If there are no holes, remove the paper backing and press the adhesive side of the switch against the door instead.

    • 3

Place the magnetic contact switch plate against the inside bottom of the door frame, opposite the magnetic contact switch.

Screw wood screws through the pre-cut holes in the plate and into the door, using the screwdriver. If there are no holes, remove the paper backing and press the adhesive side of the plate against the door instead.

    • 4

Open the battery compartment lid on the back of the wireless transmitter that is connected to the magnetic contact switch plate. Insert the correct type and number of batteries into the battery compartment. Close the lid.

    • 5

Place the back of the wireless transmitter against the baseboard of the wall, next to the door frame. Screw wood screws through the pre-cut holes in the sides of the transmitter and into the baseboard, using the screwdriver.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 1 through 5 with every door in the house that you need to protect.

    • 7

Decide on a window to be protected by your home-security alarm, for example, a picture window leading to the backyard.

    • 8

Remove the paper backing from one side of a vibration contact switch. Press the adhesive side of the switch against the glass of the window, near the bottom-right corner.

    • 9

Open the battery compartment lid on the back of the wireless transmitter that is connected to the vibration contact switch. Insert the correct type and number of batteries into the battery compartment. Close the lid.

    • 10

Place the back of the wireless transmitter against the baseboard of the wall, next to the door frame. Screw wood screws through the pre-cut holes in the sides of the transmitter and into the baseboard, using the screwdriver.

    • 11

Repeat Steps 7 through 10 with every window in the house that you need to protect.

    • 12

Place the wireless alarm receiver next to your bed on the night table. Plug the power cord into a wall outlet.

    • 13

Press the "Sync" button, or similarly named button, on the side of each transmitter once. Press the similarly named button on the receiver within 20 seconds to synchronize the transmitters to the receiver.

    • 14

Rotate the volume knob for the receiver's built-in alarm fully clockwise. If there is a selector switch instead of a knob, slide the selector switch all the way to the right.
