Enter the password on the keypad attached to or next to the home alarm system's control panel. Navigate to the configuration menu. Leave the settings as is.
Go to the fuse box. Trip the circuit breaker that supplies electric power to the control panel.
Remove the control panel cover. If screws hold the cover in place, remove the screws first with a Phillips screwdriver. If there is a locking latch holding the cover in place, use a key to unlock the latch, swing the latch open and then open the cover.
Loosen the two screws on the top of the battery that is inside the control panel; if the battery is held inside with a strap, pull the strap off first. Unwind the two wires from around the screws. Pull the wires off the screws. Pull the battery out of the control panel and dispose of it properly.
Place the replacement battery into the control panel so it occupies the same position as the other battery did. If there is a strap, pull the strap across the battery to secure it inside the control panel.
Loosen the two screws on the top of the replacement battery. Wind a wire from the control panel around each of the screws in the same manner as that of the other battery. Tighten the screws.
Place the cover back on the control panel; reattach screws or lock the latch, depending on how the cover is kept on the control panel.
Restore the electric power at the fuse box. Enter the password into the keypad. Select "Reset" to initialize the home alarm system.
