How to Trigger an Alarm System

Alarm systems are installed in cars, buildings and homes to deter burglars and thieves as well as warning in the event of a break-in. You might want to trigger your own alarm system if you have no other way of testing the system and have a way of resetting the alarm once it is active. It's not advisable to trigger your own home alarm if it's connected to an emergency response network.

Instructions

    • 1

Understand how your alarm system detects activity or intrusion. Most burglar alarm systems detect movement with sensors at various points around the home. Car alarms might detect movement or activity within the vehicle, such as turning the key in the ignition.

    • 2

Arm your alarm system by pressing the "Lock" button on your remote control or entering your security code into the control panel. Burglar alarms usually provide a countdown before the system becomes active. Car alarms usually activate as soon as you press the "Lock" button.

    • 3

Move near the burglar alarm's motion sensor or attempt to start your car. The car alarm should sound immediately on detection, while most burglar alarms provide a countdown when a disarm code can be entered to prevent the alarm. The alarm sounds when the countdown is complete.

Disarm your alarm by pressing the "Unlock" button or entering your security code into the control panel. The alarm should stop immediately once disarmed. You should now be sure that your alarm system is correctly hooked up and able to detect intruders. You might need to use your burglar alarm control panel to dismiss the recent alarm activation before you can arm the system again.
