How to Make a Remote Burglar Alarm

A wireless burglar alarm serves two purposes: it detects an intruder, and sounds an alarm that warns the homeowner and potentially frightens the intruder off. Set up a wireless burglar alarm in your home that can contact authorized personnel, such as the police or a security monitoring station, remotely without human intervention. You will need a telephone calling module and a few supplies from an electronics store.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the telephone calling module over. Open the battery compartment lid and insert the correct type and number of batteries into the battery compartment. Close the lid and return the telephone calling module to an upright position.

    • 2

Place the telephone calling module next to a telephone; the telephone could be on a desk or table, or mounted to the wall. Plug the telephone calling module's power cord into a wall outlet for power.

    • 3

Grip the plug at the end of the telephone cord that is going into a socket on the base of the telephone. Squeeze the plug so the tab is released from inside the socket. Pull the plug out of the telephone's base.

    • 4

Insert the plug from the telephone cord into the "Tel in" socket on the telephone calling module. Insert an end of a telephone cord into the "Tel out" socket on the telephone calling module. Insert the other end of the telephone cord into the socket on the telephone's base.

    • 5

Pick up the telephone handset from the base to confirm that there is a dial tone. Hang the telephone handset back on the base.

    • 6

Rotate the external antenna on the telephone calling module, if there is one, so that the tip is aimed in the general direction of the wireless burglar alarm's control panel.

    • 7

Access the menus on the telephone calling module. Enter a phone number, as per the instructions provided with the module, that will be called when the burglar alarm goes off. Record a short message, per the instructions provided, to inform those on the other end of the call that a burglary is taking place.

    • 8

Enter the password on the control panel's keypad or LCD screen to access the menus. Navigate to the configuration menu. Check the "Outgoing" or "External alarm" checkbox--the actual name may vary, depending on manufacturer and may consist of a number of screens to respond to, rather than a single checkbox.

    • 9

Navigate to the "Syncing" menu. Activate the "Sync" selection. Press the "Sync" activation button or tab on the telephone calling module to synchronize it with the control panel. If there is no "Syncing" menu on the control panel, press a "Sync" activation button or tab on the control panel instead to synchronize it with the telephone calling module. Return to the main menu. Enter the password to arm the burglar alarm.
