How to Know If Your Carbon Monoxide Detector Is Just Low on Batteries or There Is Something Wrong?

Carbon monoxide detectors keep you and your family members safe from an odorless gas that is deadly. Just as with smoke detectors, you must change a carbon monoxide detector's batteries whenever you hear a beeping sound, or once every year, to keep the device working properly. You can't always fix a carbon monoxide detector, however, by installing fresh batteries. You must test the detector properly to determine if the device's batteries are dead or if it has a serious malfunction.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the carbon monoxide detector off the wall.

    • 2

Remove the battery cover from the detector. Take the batteries out of the device.

    • 3

Blow on the inside of the battery compartment gently to eliminate any dust or dirt that is present.

    • 4

Place fresh batteries into the battery compartment. Check that the batteries are placed in the device correctly.

    • 5

Put the battery cover back on the detector.

    • 6

Press and hold the "Test" or "Test/Reset" button on the face of the device for three to five seconds. The detector's alarm should go off and the light on the face of the detector should blink. If neither occurs, repeat Steps 1 through 6 using different batteries. Replace the detector or have it serviced if the device still doesn't work.
