How to Install a Five-Wire Alarm Pad Panel

An alarm pad enables a homeowner to control an alarm system that has been installed in the home. A defective alarm pad can usually be removed and replaced without calling in a service technician or an electrician. Household tools are needed, as is a basic understanding of electrical wiring systems. Acquire an alarm pad panel from the same company that installed the alarm or from a security service center authorized to carry alarm pad panels for sale to the public.

Instructions

    • 1

Strip a 1/2-inch length of insulation from each of the five wires attached to the back of the replacement alarm pad panel using wire strippers. If the pad features a wire harness, strip the insulation from the wires on the harness and plug the harness's connector into the socket on the back of the panel.

    • 2

Enter your password into the control panel's current keypad to disarm the system. Turn off the electricity that supplies power to both the overall alarm system and to the defective alarm pad panel at the circuit breaker or fuse box.

    • 3

Remove the screws that hold the defective alarm pad panel to the wall using a Phillips-head screwdriver or a Phillips-head jeweler's screwdriver, depending on the size of the screws. Place the screws in a paper cup for use later.

    • 4

Pull the panel off the wall gently, stretching the wires in the wall behind it out a few inches. Twist the screw tab connectors off the wires. Place the connectors in a paper cup for use later.

    • 5

Separate the twisted pairs of wires from each other. Remove the alarm pad panel and dispose of it properly.

    • 6

Wind the end of the violet wire from the new panel around the end of the violet wire in the wall. Wind the end of the gray wire from the new panel around the end of the gray wire in the wall. Wind the end of the orange wire from the new panel around the end of the orange wire in the wall. Wind the end of the white wire from the new panel around the end of the white wire in the wall. Wind the end of the green/white wire from the new panel around the end of the green/white wire in the wall.

    • 7

Twist a screw-tab connector, from the cup, onto each pair of twisted wires. Twist the connectors on each pair of wires until it is very secure.

    • 8

Push the wires gently back into the hole in the wall. Place the replacement alarm pad panel over the holes and reattach it to the wall with screws stored in the cup.

    • 9

Restore the electric power at the fuse box. Enter your password on the control panel. Select the "Reset" setting. Let the alarm system reset.
