How to Change the Personal Code on an Alarm System

The personal code configured in your home alarm system enables you to disarm the system when you arrive home. The code must be entered within a preset time; otherwise, the alarm will be triggered. You might want to change your personal code if it is forgotten or becomes known by people outside your circle of trust. Since every alarm system is different, the exact location and names of particular buttons may vary based on your model.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter your alarm's configuration mode via the main keypad. There is usually a button or combination of buttons that puts the system into configuration mode. Some models of DSC alarm use "*" then "5," for example. Skip this step if your alarm system does not have a configuration mode button.

    • 2

Enter the alarm's "Master Code" using the numbered buttons. This code is used to add, remove and amend personal codes as well as administer the system. The master code should be written down in a safe place. There is often a space in the alarm's manual for owners to record their master code

Press the alarm's "Add" then "Access Code" button if necessary. Some alarm systems require you to choose from the main menu before selecting a personal code. Skip this step if your alarm does not have an "Add" or "Access Code" button.

Select the personal code you want to change. Most alarm systems store several personal codes in their memory to be divided between family members. Selecting a personal code often involves entering the number of the code via the numbered buttons. For example, personal code "02" is selected by entering "0" then "2."

    • 5

Enter the new personal code using the numbered buttons. The code should be three digits or longer; however, different alarm manufacturers may impose different requirements. You might have to select the personal code a second time using the "Left" and "Right" arrow buttons on some models of DSC alarm.

Press the "#" button to exit and save your new code. Your alarm system might use a different button to confirm the code. Your new personal code will work immediately.
