How to Fit a House Alarm

A basic house alarm consists of a wired connection between a sensor on an entranceway, for example, a window and a control panel that houses an alarm siren. To fit a house alarm to protect a window, acquire a house alarm kit from a hobby store or a hardware store that includes a window sensor and a control panel with a built-in siren. You will need household tools but no electrical skills. There will be no subscription charges or added fees, unless you decide to purchase additional sensors (compatible) to use with the house alarm.

  • Window sensor, vibration type
  • Wire strippers
  • Wire cable spool

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the window that will be protected by the house alarm, for example, a living-room window leading to the backyard or a window in a bedroom on the ground floor.

    • 2

Remove the paper backing from the window sensor. Place the sensor, adhesive side facing away from you, against the glass on the window, near the lower right corner.

    • 3

Strip a half inch of insulation from the ends of the two wires that are already exposed at one end of the included wire cable spool, using wire strippers.

    • 4

Loosen the two screws on the window sensor, using a Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Wind a wire around each screw. Tighten the screws.

    • 5

Run the cable from the spool down the side of the wall to the baseboard. Run the cable along the baseboard to a location where the siren of the house alarm control panel can be heard by the head of the house, for example, the master bedroom.

    • 6

Staple the cable to the wall and to the baseboard with U-clamp staples, using a staple gun.

    • 7

Cut the cable from the spool, using scissors or wire cutters. Slit 3 inches in from the cut end of the cable, using a unity knife. Peel back the insulation. Separate the two wires from inside the cable. Strip a half inch of insulation from the ends of the two wires, using wire strippers.

    • 8

Place the control panel on a table Loosen the two screws on the back panel where it is labeled "Input," using a Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Wind a wire around each screw. Tighten the screws.

    • 9

Plug the control panel's power cord into a wall outlet for power. Rotate the volume knob on the panel fully clockwise. Press the power button to turn the control panel on. A siren should now sound if the window the sensor is attached to is shaken or broken.
