Theft Deterrent Ideas

Keeping your family safe is not just about physical safety. It is also about safeguarding your property and belongings. Deterring theft in the home is an important part of home ownership. A combination of alarm and security systems, entry point reinforcement and visual theft deterrents can help to make sure that thieves do not look at your home as a potential target.
  1. Security Systems

    • Install a security system in your home. Security systems are one of the most effective means of preventing thefts. A different target will instantly look more appealing when a thief sees a sign for a security system. If someone tries to break in anyway, alarms will go off and the alarm monitoring company will call the police so that they can stop the burglary.

    Newspapers and Mail

    • Make sure that you don't ever let newspapers or mail pile up at your house. It is a sign that no one is at the house regularly. This is a green light for those with larceny in their hearts. Have a neighbor pick up your mail if you are going to be away. Call the newspaper and ask them to hold your subscription whenever you are away.

    Motion Sensor Lights

    • Install external lights that are wired to a motion sensor. If someone approaches your house late at night in the dark and lights suddenly turn on, they are less likely to pursue breaking into your home. The lights may make a robber think that someone is home, which results in the thief either fleeing or at least choosing a different target.

    Upgrade Locks and Doors

    • Thieves break into houses through weak doors and windows. Always make sure that you keep doors and windows locked. Upgrade to heavy duty locks, solid core doors and stronger window locks. Windows don't normally have an actual lock, just a latch. Installing an actual lock on the window makes it harder for someone to break in. Bars on the window can also help prevent burglary.
