How to Set Up & Place Security Cameras

Security cameras are useful in providing evidence to the police if a crime, for example a break-in, occurs on a property. There are dozens of types of security cameras. They can be wireless or wired, and some are designed for use with a computer. Setting up the cameras will depend on the type of cameras selected. Most security companies recommend having the control unit, monitors and/or hard drive in a secure, stationary location.

Instructions

Survey the property. The cameras will likely be placed outside, near possible entry points and inside near valuables (art, safe, jewelry box). Ideally, the cameras will be inconspicuous. However, this is often not possible, given the setup of a property. A highly visible camera can also be a crime deterrent. Take notes and remember how many cameras will be needed. Determine the best placement for the cameras. The camera should be out of reach, so that thieves can not easily cover it but should also angle the entry point to be able to catch a person's face.

    • 2

Purchase the necessary hardware. The cameras will need to have a control panel that supports them. Most control panels will be bundled with cameras. The control panel will connect and/or power the cameras and manage the video feeds, and possibly record the feeds as well.

Attach the cameras to the home. The cameras must be securely attached to their locations. Different cameras have different methods of installation. For example, outdoor cameras are often drilled into the brick or wood of a home. Indoor cameras may use a strong adhesive.

Install batteries into wireless cameras. Attach wires to wired cameras. The wire should be run to the control unit above the camera and preferably go to the inside of the house immediately. This will prevent thieves from cutting the camera cable.

    • 5

Attach the camera cables to the control unit. Turn on the control unit and finish installing additional components. These will vary depending on the specifications of the model and cameras. Test the security cameras.
