Do-it-Yourself Home Security for Pre-wired Homes

Home security typically consists of sensors that monitor doors and windows in a house. Break-ins are reported to a control panel that sets off an alarm or sends a signal to an outside monitoring station. A do-it-yourself home security system can be set up in a home that has been wired for sensors. Household tools will be needed as well as a wired security kit that can be purchased from an electronics store or a security-service supply center.

Remove the paper backing from one of the window sensors that came with the home security kit you purchased. Place the sensor's adhesive side against a window's corner edge, next to where the wires coming from the wall are located. Press the sensor against the window. Let the adhesive set for an hour before continuing.

Twist the ends of the two wires around the ends of the two same-colored wires coming out of the wall. Wrap a strip of electrical tape around each twisted pair of wires. Repeat this procedure with the window sensors on every window in the house that has wires coming out of the wall next to them.

Open one of the doors that have wires coming out of the wall next to the doorframe. Remove the adhesive from one side of the magnetic switch that comes with the home security kit. Place the adhesive side of the switch against the bottom edge of the door. Press the switch against the door.
