How to Use Two Motion Detectors With One Light

Motion detectors serve a wide range of purposes from lighting an area to triggering an alarm. With the need to save money, many households today are breaking away from paid alarm services and exploring their options in the marketplace. One viable solution to expanding the coverage area of your protection is to install a unit, known as an adapter kit, that allows for the addition of two or more motion detectors to one light switch. These units can be installed in a very straight forward fashion operating wirelessly and avoiding the need to run additional wiring.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the fuse box, or circuit panel, in your home. Turn off power to the switch you want to change out.

    • 2

Flip your light switch a few times to be certain the switch is no longer functional.

    • 3

Remove the screws from the face plate of the light switch. Lift and remove the face plate from the wall.

    • 4

Unscrew the two screws holding the electrical box in place within the wall. Pull the switch from the electrical box by 2 or 3 inches.

    • 5

Jot down which wires go to which screw making a label for each. This way you will be able to reconnect the wires with little confusion. Attach your label to each wire, removing the wires from the switch with the pliers.

    • 6

Remove the old switch and install your new switch in the same position. Connect the wires according to your labels.

    • 7

Place the switch in the electrical box and affix it with the two screws you removed earlier. Mount the switch in place.

    • 8

Reattach the face plate cover for your light switch.

    • 9

Place your first motion sensor at your desired location. Ideally you will want your sensors high in a corner. Screw in your mounting brackets and attach the sensor in place. Repeat the same procedure with your second motion sensor.

    • 10

Adjust your motion sensors according to your preference. You should consult your manual as settings vary by brand.

    • 11

Return to your fuse box and turn the power back on. Test your motion sensors as they should be ready to detect your motion.
