How to Troubleshoot the Nighthawk CO Detector

Carbon monoxide, or CO, is a poisonous, odorless and colorless gas produced by incomplete combustion of fuels such as natural gas, gasoline, kerosene and oil. When inhaled, carbon monoxide supplants oxygen in the blood. Large amounts of carbon monoxide in the air can overcome an individual quickly, resulting in unconsciousness and death by suffocation. The Nighthawk CO detector continuously monitors carbon monoxide levels inside a residence. A red LED readout displays levels of CO up to 30 parts per million. CO levels above 30 parts per million are approaching harmful levels and trigger a loud audible alarm. The Nighthawk CO detector performs a self-diagnosis every 15 seconds and uses audible alerts and LED display codes to indicate malfunction for troubleshooting purposes.

Instructions

    • 1

Install a 9-volt backup battery if the LED displays "Lb" alternating with "0" and a chirp alarm sounds every 15 seconds. This indicates that no battery is installed.

    • 2

Replace a nearly discharged 9-volt backup battery if the LED displays a flashing dot and a chirp alarm sounds every 30 seconds. A low backup battery may not sense dangerous CO levels.

    • 3

Contact the Kidde Nighthawk Consumer Hotline at 800-880-6788 if the LED displays a flashing dot and a steady "Err" and a chirp alarm sounds every 30 seconds. This indicates that the unit is malfunctioning on AC power.

    • 4

Plug into an AC outlet as soon as possible if the LED displays a flashing dot and "Err" and a chirp alarm sounds every 30 seconds. This indicates that the unit is unplugged and running on the 9-volt backup battery.

    • 5

Contact Kidde Nighthawk Consumer Hotline if the LED displays "Err" continuously and a chirp alarm sounds every 20 seconds. This indicates a major component failure.

    • 6

Contact Kidde Nighthawk Consumer Hotline if the LED display is blank and the alarm sounds continuously and cannot be silenced by pushing the Test/Reset button. This indicates a microprocessor failure.

    • 7

Test all systems once a month by pressing the Test/Reset button. The LED should display "888" and you should hear four audible beeps followed by 5 seconds of silence and another four audible beeps. The LED should display "888" for several more seconds then reset to "0." Contact the Kidde Nighthawk Consumer Hotline if the test does not produce correct results.
