How to Install an Alarm System With a Drill Bit

Installing an alarm system in your home will keep you and your family safe from burglars and intruders. Before you begin, plan the project in an organized manner and prepare a basic blueprint of your home and outside landscaping. This will let you identify the most likely places an intrusion can occur, such as windows, doors, and other entry or exit points, and enable you to choose the best location to install the different components of the alarm system. Once you determine the locations of all components, you will have to use drill bits of various sizes to make holes that accommodate the system's screws and cables.

Decide where you want to install the main control panel for the alarm system. It is usually a good idea to mount the control panel near the door you use most often to enter or exit the property. Another consideration is how easy it will be to run cables from the sensors back to the panel. Use a small drill bit to make one hole for each screw attaching the panel to the wall. The specific size of the drill bit will depend on the model of the alarm system.

Determine the location of the siren box. This component of the alarm system is often left visible because it tends to ward off potential intruders. The siren box should ideally be installed high on a wall so it cannot be easily reached. Use an appropriate drill bit (refer to manual) for the screws attaching the siren box to the wall. Do not physically install the main control panel (from step 1) and the siren box yet; these components will be installed after running the cables.

    • 3

Determine the sensor positions. These are usually the entry and exit points and other locations in the property vulnerable to intrusion. Most alarm systems are installed with sensors in each door and window. Install the magnetic sensors on sliding windows and doors by referring to manufacturer's instructions for the particular make and model of the system.

Drill holes for the cables. The various components of the alarm, including the sensors, control panel and siren box, will be integrated into a single system by connecting them with cables. Consider the number and thickness of the cables before choosing an appropriate drill bit to make the holes, making sure the gaps are wide enough to accommodate all cables. Keep away from the property's main cabling to avoid accidentally snapping any electrical wiring.

    • 5

Run cables from each sensor position to the main control panel. You will need a six- or eight-core cable (refer to manufacturer's instructions) running continuously from each sensor to the main panel. Remember to leave a few feet of spare cabling. This will allow you to tweak the final position of the sensors. You can hide the extra length of the cable by pushing it back inside the walls.

Run cable(s) to connect the siren box to the main control panel. The number and type of cable will depend on the make and model of the alarm system. Mount the main control panel, siren box, sensors and any additional keypads by inserting screws into the drilled holes. Connect all components and slide any slack cabling by pushing it inside the holes in the walls.
