How to Use an Alarm System to Run a Sprinkler System

Many new alarm systems are full home safety units. They monitor not only home security (doors, windows, motion detectors) but also fire alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and even sprinkler systems. Sprinkler systems are handy in fire prevention as they are automated, which can be useful when inhabitants are sleeping or away on vacation. To connect the sprinkler system to the alarm, so that the alarm company knows that the sprinkler system has been tripped, the two units must be compatible. The alarm company must offer sprinkler monitoring via their control unit.

Connect wireless sensors to each sprinkler head. Sprinkler heads are mechanical devices and operate independently. When the temperature near a sprinkler head rises above a certain point it will activate, but unless other heads have the same increase in temperature, they will not. The wireless sensor can either be a temperature sensor, set to the same temperature as the sprinkler head, or a water sensor, that detects water coming from the system.
