A common problem for homeowners is the occurrence of false alarms from home security systems. Many ADT alarm systems are professionally monitored. Still, false alarms can happen on ADT systems for several reasons, including use of incorrect codes, unsecured doors and windows, homeowner forgetfulness or obstructions such as tree branches or wandering animals that find their way in front of motion sensors. Minimize false alarms by locking all doors and windows before you activate the system and by securing any fences and pets while the motion detectors are operating. Weak batteries in the control pad can also trigger a false alarm, so ensure the batteries inside the unit are fresh.
Lost Key Mode, available on ADT Security systems such as the Safewatch EZ system, helps authorized users activate and deactivate their protection even if they lose their access code. This mode is a limited version of ADT protection and, while the system will still activate if the perimeter is breached, it will not activate if a key unlocks the dead bolt. If the alarm is activated, models such as the Safewatch EZ come with a fob that slides into the control pad, disarming the system.
A control pad that beeps constantly is suffering from a low battery. Replacing the battery in the control pad will solve this problem, but if you are not heading to the store right away, the noise can disrupt your peace. Turn this noise off by pressing the “OFF” key. When you press this key, the low-battery reminder remains visible on the display pad but the audible reminder goes silent.
Some ADT systems, such as those provided by General Electric, also monitor and regulate phone activity. Although this prevents unauthorized calls from adding to your phone bill, it can prevent the homeowner from making occasional calls to numbers not on the authorized list. For these systems, disengage the locking feature temporarily by entering "#" and then "7" and then "3" into the dial pad. The phone should return to a normal dial tone after this code is entered. Wait five seconds before entering the phone number, then place the call as normal.
