How to Activate an Existing Home Alarm System

Home alarm systems can be deactivated after installation for a variety of reasons. The most common include the sale of a home, change of tenancy or cancellation of service. Although an alarm is not currently active, you can typically reinstate service and reactivate the alarm at any time with a minimal amount of effort on your part. However, it's likely you'll need a technician to help. "Activating existing alarm systems, or performing a 'takeover,' involves a critically important process requiring technical expertise, knowledge and time to do the job properly," advises Secure Protection.

Instructions

    • 1

Look on the security system control panel to find the name of the home security service provider that installed the system. Although you may want to work with the same company to reactivate the system, many security service providers can work with equipment installed by a different company.

    • 2

Call the customer service center of the company that installed the alarm, or the security service provider that you’d like to work with.

    • 3

Select the teleprompt option to reactivate an existing security system when instructed to do so.

    • 4

Inform the customer service representative that you would like to reactive an existing alarm system. Be prepared to provide your physical address, phone number and identification numbers on the system control box. Stay by the box as the service representative may need you to operate some of its controls to test the system.

    • 5

Choose which security service plan you’d like to use. Companies may offer various levels of protection at various price points. Select whatever plan fits within your budget and provides the protection you desire.

    • 6

Set an appointment for a representative of the security service provider to come to your home and physically reactivate the system.

    • 7

If the system is newer, follow the reactivation steps the customer service representative provides over the phone as he sends remote signals to the control panel.
