How to Wire a Home Security System Relay Board

A security system provides your family with peace of mind that their home is being protected while they're away. It also provides a way of contacting police, ambulance and fire services in an emergency. The heart of the security system is its relay board, or control panel. It connects all of the sensors, key pads, power and communication systems in one unit. Wiring the relay board is a simple process once you understand where the wire's go.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cover off the relay panel by unlocking it and pulling the door open. Some units may require removing screws to gain access to the connections.

    • 2

Loose the electrical terminals with a screwdriver so they can accept the wire connections.

    • 3

Strip 3/8 inch of insulation off the power, detector, siren and phone wires with wire strippers.

    • 4

Insert the two power wires from the transformer inside the terminals marked "AC" and tighten them down. The polarity of these wires does not matter.

    • 5

Insert the red positive power wire from each motion detector and glass breakage detector, into the "+ AUX" terminal and tighten it down. Insert the black negative power wire from each motion detector and glass breakage detector into the "- AUX" terminal and tighten it down

    • 6

Insert the red and black wires from the bell, or siren, into the terminal marked "Bell" and tighten it down. Pay attention to the connections polarity.

    • 7

Insert the red, black, yellow and green wires from the keypad into the terminals marked "RED," "BLK," "YEL" and "GRN," paying attention to the wire color. You can connect multiple keypads to these terminals.

    • 8

Insert the yellow wires from the detectors in the zone connections. These are marked "Z1," "Z2," "Z3" and "Z4." Group the detectors into individual areas of the home and insert all of the yellow wires from one area in a selected zone and tighten it down.

    • 9

Insert the green wires from the detectors in the "COM" terminal and tighten it down.

    • 10

Push the green or bare ground wire into the "GRD" terminal and tighten it down.

    • 11

Insert the green, red, yellow and black wires from your phone connection into the corresponding terminals marked "Phone." These connections are only necessary if your system is monitored by a security company.
