Sensors to Know If Someone Is in Your Driveway

There are several different types of sensors and alarms that will tell you if someone is in your driveway. These are particularly useful if you live alone, in a rural area, have vision or hearing disabilities, or need to keep your home safe during long periods away. Many sensors are easy enough to install yourself, or you can have an electrician install them. If you already have a home security system, the company that installed it may be able to install driveway sensors for you and connect them to your current system.
  1. Motion Detector Operation

    • Motion detectors are one of the simplest options for sensors that let you know if someone is in your driveway. When someone crosses the path of the sensor, it sends a signal to a base unit that tells you that someone or something is moving around in your driveway. Motion sensors pick up everything from cats to cars, so if you live in a rural area you may get alarms when it’s just a deer or raccoon in your driveway. Most motion detectors have a variety of ranges: some models detect motion up to only 30 feet away while others can sense motion within a half-mile of placement.

    Setting Up Motion Detectors

    • Motion detectors usually need to be mounted onto something sturdy, like a fence or the side of your house, to work accurately. They can be hard-wired or work wirelessly. Some can be programmed to play a voice recording announcing that a presence has been detected. Large properties or long driveways require multiple detectors all connected to the same base unit to cover the full length of the area. Additional alarm units that communicate with the base unit can be placed throughout your home, so you are never out of visual or aural distance of them.

    Magnetic Vehicle Sensors

    • Magnetic vehicle sensors are placed beneath your driveway and give off a signal when they detect a metal object nearby. These can pick up everything from a bicycle or golf cart to a large SUV. These sensors are good if you are concerned about cars in your driveway, but they will not pick up individual people simply walking up the drive.

    Customization and Use of Sensors

    • With all sensors, there are ways to defeat or get around the sensor. For personal safety or protection of property, multiple systems are recommended, including a home security system plus motion or magnetic vehicle sensors. Sensors can be tailored to your individual needs, such as ignoring pets and small disturbances, alerting you to how far a car is up your drive, and other factors. When you install any kind of sensor attached to an alarm or alert, let your local law enforcement agency know in case it needs to check things out or enter the property when you are not present.
