Problems in Fire Alarm Devices

A fire alarm device is designed to detect and warn people of the presence of fire and give off an alert to evacuate the premises. While this device can save lives, it also comes with certain problems that must be addressed to ensure it works properly and alerts people with hearing impairments of possible dangers inside a home.
  1. Batteries

    • Fire alarm devices operate on batteries that need to be replaced periodically. While taking out and installing batteries can be inconvenient, not replacing the batteries is unsafe for everyone in the household. One of the problems associated with replacing the batteries is remembering to do it. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends replacing the batteries once a year. Also, because fire alarm devices are located on the top of walls or on ceilings, it can be difficult to change the batteries safely without the help of a ladder and someone assisting.

    Testing

    • To prevent a more serious problem from occurring, homeowners should test fire alarm devices once a month. Fire alarm devices have a testing button that allows individuals to test the alarm system at any time. If the fire alarm does not operate properly, the device needs to be replaced or repaired immediately.

    False Alarms

    • While fire alarm devices are reliable when detecting smoke, they can sometimes set off a false alarm when someone is cooking or smoking a cigar nearby. The smoke from candles can also falsely set off an alarm. Not only is a false alarm annoying, it can also be dangerous if it causes everyone in the home to rush around. Because removing the batteries or turning a fire alarm off is not an option, individuals need to be aware of where fire alarms are located and avoid sending smoke in that direction.

    Alternate Options

    • While fire alarm devices give off a high-pitched electronic sound to alert individuals of a fire and when to exit the house, those who are hard of hearing will need to have an alternate option. Senior citizens and those who are living with a hearing impairment may need to purchase a fire alarm device that flashes bright lights to alert them of danger.
