How to Open an ADT Fire Detector

ADT fire detectors are hard-wired or connected electrically to a central digital control pad in your home. They contain backup batteries that are used whenever the power goes out. Occasionally, these batteries will need to be replaced. When the batteries are low, it makes the alarm chirp or beep every hour. If you do not replace the batteries within seven days of the first chirp, it will begin to beep every 40 seconds -- which can be quite aggravating. To avoid this, open your ADT smoke/fire detector to replace the batteries, every six months.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter your user code plus "5" into the ADT alarm system control pad. This puts it into test mode. The control pad will beep every 30 seconds while in test mode.

    • 2

Place a step ladder underneath the smoke detector. Climb the step ladder to reach it.

    • 3

Open the smoke detector by holding onto its cover and twisting it counterclockwise one-half inch, then pulling it toward you.

    • 4

Remove the batteries from the smoke detector. Wait 30 seconds, and then insert the new batteries. Push the cover back against the unit's mount, and twist it clockwise to reinstall it.

    • 5

Return to the alarm control pad. Enter your user code plus "1" -- twice in a row -- to turn off the test mode.
