How to Add a Door to an Alarm System

When an alarm system is installed, doors and windows are often outfitted with a transmitter. This transmitter sends a signal to the control panel when the door or window is open. If you have installed another door or wish to include a door that wasn't originally included in the alert system, you will need to have an additional transmitter. If you don't currently have one, contact your alarm company to request an additional transmitter.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the protective backing from the wireless transmitter. A transmitter is composed of a sensor and magnet. Hold the adhesive backing on the sensor on the edge of the door, next to the door frame.

    • 2

Attach the corresponding magnet next to the sensor on the door frame. Hold the magnet firmly in place for several seconds to give the adhesive time to adhere. When the sensor is moved more than a half-inch from the magnet, the alarm will be activated.

    • 3

Press "Set" or "Setup" on the alarm system's control panel.

    • 4

Enter the password when prompted, followed by the "Ent" or "Enter" key. Often, this is four to six digits.

    • 5

Search the menu for the Program Sensor option and press "Enter."

    • 6

Enter the zone number or transmitter number when prompted. Each entry/exit door is assigned a zone number. This number is available on the transmitter or in the instructions. Then press "Enter."

    • 7

Select the option to activate the sensor, then press "Enter." The new transmitter is now active and ready to sound an alarm when the door is opened.
