My House Fire Alarm Chirps on & Then Goes Off

You rely on your home's smoke detector to alert you when a fire starts, but the alarm sometimes chirps or goes off even when no smoke is present. Smoke detector chirping annoys everyone in your home, especially when the cause of these false alarms is not obvious. Chirping often happens when the fire alarm has low batteries or faulty wiring. Insects or dust inside the fire alarm also cause it to sound. Regular fire alarm maintenance eliminates chirping from these sources.

Instructions

    • 1

Change the fire alarm's batteries. Low batteries usually cause chirping until you replace them. The type of batteries you need depends on your particular fire alarm. AAA, AA and nine-volt batteries are the most common types.

    • 2

Vacuum the fire alarm using a soft brush attachment. This removes dust and dirt inside the fire alarm. Too much dust can cause a false alarm.

    • 3

Check the fire alarm for insects. If you find dead insects, discard them. Spray insect repellent around the fire alarm to eliminate live insects. Never spray insect repellent directly inside the fire alarm.

Look at the fire alarm's electric wiring. Loose wiring causes brief chirping. A grounded interconnect wire also cause false alarms. Only use the interconnect wire to connect the device to other fire alarms.
